Shore power—also referred to as cold ironing or Onshore Power Supply (OPS)—connects a berthed vessel to the port's electrical grid so that it can switch off its auxiliary engines entirely. The system goes beyond a simple power outlet: it includes high-capacity cables, frequency converters, shore-side substations, and standardised connection interfaces. Cutting auxiliary engine runtime eliminates nearly all emissions and noise at berth, making shore power a cornerstone of port decarbonisation strategies. Under the EU's Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), major European ports are required to provide OPS connections on a defined rollout schedule.
