Shipping documents accompany a consignment with all information required for transport, customs clearance, and payment: shipper and consignee details, commodity description, quantity, value, and any applicable customs specifics. The standard set includes the commercial invoice and packing list, plus the relevant transport document—bill of lading for sea freight, air waybill (AWB) for air cargo, and CMR consignment note for road transport. Depending on destination and cargo type, certificates of origin, conformity declarations, phytosanitary certificates, or export licences are added. Incomplete or incorrect shipping documents expose freight forwarders to customs holds, demurrage, and liability claims. Under a letter of credit, the stipulated documents are a payment prerequisite—any discrepancy can block disbursement.
