Freight forwarders, shippers, and suppliers use a shipping advice to notify the consignee ahead of an incoming delivery, specifying what is being sent, in what quantity, and when it is expected to arrive. The document – also referred to as a pre-advice or despatch notification – typically includes the consignment reference, goods description, quantity, delivery point, and estimated arrival date. In warehouse operations, it allows dock slots to be reserved, staffing to be arranged, and inventory systems to be updated before the goods reach the facility. In international trade, shipping advice is frequently required under letter-of-credit terms or as a mandatory post-shipment notification to the buyer. It should not be confused with the delivery note, which physically accompanies the consignment and is signed by the consignee as proof of receipt.
