Freight forwarders and logistics operators use shipment registration to capture all master data for a consignment in their transport management system (TMS): shipper, consignee, goods description, weight, dimensions, number of packages, and any special handling instructions. Every downstream process—route planning, capacity allocation, shipment tracking, and automated invoicing—relies on this data. Entry is performed manually at order intake or automatically via EDI interfaces, barcode scanning, or customer portals. Errors introduced at registration propagate through the entire process chain, causing extra work at delivery, customs clearance, and billing; quality checks are therefore most effective when applied at the point of capture. Shipment registration should not be confused with the customs declaration: the former is an internal system event, while the latter is a formal obligation governed by customs law.
