A shipment leaves the warehouse intact but arrives crushed or broken – that is precisely the scenario proper shipment packaging is designed to prevent. Shipment packaging encompasses the complete packaging unit prepared for transport: the outer casing (carton, wooden crate, plastic container or pallet) together with inner protective materials such as cushioning, void fill or dividers. Unlike retail packaging, which is consumer-facing, shipment packaging serves a purely functional purpose – protecting cargo against impact, vibration, moisture and contamination across the entire transit chain. Forwarders and shippers typically design it to meet recognised test standards such as ISTA or DIN specifications. Inadequate packaging can result in damage claims, return shipments and, where dangerous goods are involved, regulatory penalties.
