Shipment classification is the systematic categorisation of a consignment according to measurable and regulatory attributes: weight, volume, declared value, contents, and special properties such as hazard class, temperature requirements, or fragility. Carriers and freight forwarders rely on this classification to select the appropriate transport mode, calculate freight charges, and assign correct storage locations. The most consequential application lies in customs: correct classification under the Harmonized System (HS) determines the applicable duty rate and any import restrictions or licensing requirements. Misclassification can result in duty shortfalls, penalties, and shipment holds. It should be distinguished from freight class ratings used in domestic less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping, which are based solely on density and handling characteristics.
