> The Ship Security Officer (SSO) is the person appointed by the master to manage and oversee the day-to-day implementation of the vessel's security plan.

The Ship Security Officer (SSO) is the person appointed by the master to manage and oversee the day-to-day implementation of the vessel's security plan. The role is defined under the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code) and is mandatory on seagoing passenger and cargo ships of specified size undertaking international voyages. The SSO records security incidents, reports them to the master and the Company Security Officer (CSO), and coordinates responses to threats such as unauthorised access, smuggling, or sabotage. During Port State Control inspections and port arrivals, the SSO acts as the primary shipboard contact for the Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO). Unlike the CSO, who holds company-wide security responsibility, the SSO's accountability is limited to one specific vessel.
