Shippers are required to use seaworthy packaging when the bill of lading stipulates it, or when trade terms such as CIF place a duty of care on the seller. Reinforced wooden crates, moisture-barrier films, desiccants, and corrosion-inhibiting coatings are standard solutions—far more robust than typical road or air freight packaging. Practically speaking, inadequate seaworthy packaging is one of the most common grounds on which cargo insurers deny claims.
