Goods travel as full container loads (FCL), less-than-container loads (LCL), break-bulk, or in bulk, connecting ports across every continent. The bill of lading serves simultaneously as freight contract and document of title; Incoterms such as FOB or CIF determine where costs and risk transfer between seller and buyer. Sea freight is substantially cheaper than air freight, though transit times are considerably longer, and — unlike road or rail — it enables intercontinental connections that no overland network can replicate.
