> Sea freight costs are the total of all charges incurred when transporting goods by ocean.

Sea freight costs are the total of all charges incurred when transporting goods by ocean. The base freight rate – typically quoted per TEU or per metric ton – is the starting point; surcharges such as the Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF) for fuel fluctuations, Terminal Handling Charges (THC), security surcharges, and port dues are added on top. Depending on the trade lane, season, and market conditions, further variable levies – such as a Peak Season Surcharge – may apply. Shippers and freight forwarders must account for all components to produce accurate quotations, since the gap between the quoted base rate and the true all-in price can be substantial.
