A screening hit arises during shipment processing when an automated or manual compliance system detects a match between shipment data and entries on sanctions, security, or watchlists. Common triggers include names of shippers or consignees, addresses, company identifiers, or commodity descriptions that correspond to entries on EU, UN, or national export control authority lists. The hit itself is not a finding of wrongdoing: it initiates an escalation in which the compliance team validates the match and rules out false positives – coincidental similarities with no actual sanctions relevance. Only after sign-off by a compliance officer or the relevant authority may the shipment proceed. Leaving a hit unresolved carries regulatory risk even if no actual sanctions breach is ultimately identified.
