The term is an umbrella concept spanning document completeness checks, physical customs inspections, and the matching of parties against sanctions lists. Freight forwarders, customs authorities, and security service providers use both automated systems and manual controls, depending on the risk profile of the shipment or partner. In air cargo, high risk cargo (HRCM) is subject to particularly enhanced screening requirements. In a narrower compliance context, screening is often used interchangeably with sanctions list screening or name screening, although it technically covers a broader range of control activities.
