A carrier pulls up to a distribution centre and attempts to dock without a prior booking—the result is often hours of waiting or an outright turn-away. Scheduled dock appointments are pre-reserved time slots in which a specific vehicle occupies a defined dock door for loading or unloading. Bookings are typically made through a yard management or slot-booking system, anywhere from a few hours to several days in advance. This allows facilities to distribute staff and handling equipment workload evenly across the day, cut idle time, and keep the overall material flow predictable. Most large distribution centres and logistics hubs now make advance booking mandatory; vehicles without a confirmed appointment are denied access or directed to a standby queue.
