Schedule reliability measures the share of sailings on which a shipping line arrives within a defined tolerance of its published schedule – capturing actual operational performance rather than commercial promises. It differs from capacity or rate indicators by focusing on execution: a vessel that departs on time but arrives days late counts against the score. For forwarders and shippers, poor reliability translates directly into supply chain costs – excess inventory, production stoppages, and penalty clauses with buyers. On high-volume trades such as Asia–Europe, port congestion, weather, and carrier blank sailings are the main drivers of underperformance. Independent analysts publish monthly rankings by carrier and trade lane, giving shippers an objective basis for carrier selection and contract negotiations.
