This mobility allows terminal operators to reconfigure yard layouts and storage zones at short notice — the key advantage over rail-mounted gantry (RMG) systems. A typical RTG spans six to eight container rows and stacks up to six units high. RTG fleets are commonly powered by diesel-electric drives or, increasingly, electrified cable reel systems; tyre wear and energy consumption are the primary cost drivers. The RTG is a standard feature of medium to large container terminals worldwide and is used in both conventional and semi-automated yard configurations.
