Driving time, cost, traffic forecasts, recipient time windows, and statutory driving and rest hour regulations all feed into the calculation. Route planning is therefore the operational foundation of transport control. It differs from route optimization, which dynamically adjusts a planned route in real time as conditions change. Modern TMS platforms largely automate route planning and connect it with order management and telematics data.
