In international goods transport, the term covers HGV tolls, vignette obligations, and distance-based charges such as Germany's truck toll system or Switzerland's LSVA performance-related heavy vehicle fee. On transit corridors through Alpine countries in particular, these charges can account for a significant portion of variable transport costs. Forwarders and transport planners factor them into every routing decision as a matter of course. They are distinct from vehicle excise duty, which is assessed on the vehicle itself rather than tied to actual road use.
