Road consolidated shipments bring together partial consignments from multiple unrelated shippers into a single truck load, coordinated and operated by a freight forwarder acting as consolidator. The concept belongs to less-than-truckload (LTL) transport and is the road freight equivalent of sea freight consolidation. Goods are collected at an inbound hub, sorted, and loaded onto a shared vehicle; at destination, a second distribution hub handles final delivery to each consignee. The additional handling steps at both ends are offset by significantly lower per-shipment freight costs compared to full truckload (FTL) service. For shippers with regular but volume-limited cargo flows, road consolidation is the most cost-efficient option in surface transport.
