The quay must provide flat, open marshalling areas and fixed or ship-mounted ramps with suitable gradient tolerances. These ports are the backbone of the global automotive trade, particularly for Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs), and equally suited to project cargo too heavy or awkward for conventional lifting. They differ fundamentally from LoLo (lift-on/lift-off) terminals, where gantry cranes handle the cargo. In freight forwarding practice, key considerations include ramp availability, lashing capacity, and vehicle processing — so-called compound logistics.
