The Rhine is one of Europe's busiest inland waterways, linking the North Sea ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam with Switzerland and carrying high volumes of bulk commodities such as coal, grain, steel, mineral oil, and containers. Rhine vessels must comply with technical standards under the UNECE inland waterway classification system and the regulations of the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR). Coastal or deep-sea vessels that occasionally call at Rhine ports form a legally and technically distinct category.
