At minimum, the chip holds a unique item identifier (EPC), but can also carry batch numbers, best-before dates, or temperature logs. The key operational benefit is bulk reading: multiple tags can be captured simultaneously, saving considerable time at automated sortation conveyors or during pallet-level stock counts compared to barcode scanning. Passive RFID tags—the most common type—require no battery and are powered by the reader's electromagnetic field; active tags broadcast their own signal over greater distances but come at higher cost.
