Unlike a standard outbound label where the sender addresses and pays for shipment, a return label has the destination address and tracking number pre-filled by the retailer or logistics provider, who also bears the carriage costs. The customer receives it either enclosed in the original delivery or digitally via email or a self-service returns portal. In e-commerce, QR-code-based digital return labels have become the norm, allowing customers to drop off parcels at carrier points without printing anything. Pre-filled labels also speed up warehouse goods receipt, as each scan automatically links the return to its original order. A return label should not be confused with an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) document, which additionally records the return reason and authorisation details.
