A freight forwarder picks up a consignment of electronic components, only to discover during pre-clearance that the import requires a product certification, an import licence, and a safety declaration. That is the defining feature of restricted goods: lawful to ship, but conditional. Unlike prohibited goods, which are banned outright, restricted goods may be imported, exported, or transited once all permits, licences, and supporting documentation are in place. Common examples include prescription pharmaceuticals, arms and ammunition subject to arms control regulations, dual-use technology requiring export licensing, live animals, and certain foodstuffs. For logistics providers, this translates into thorough compliance checks, close coordination with issuing authorities, and longer lead times before dispatch.
