A freight forwarder preparing a cross-border rail shipment of chemicals must be familiar with RID from the outset. RID (Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail) is the binding international framework governing the rail transport of hazardous goods, incorporated as Appendix C to the COTIF convention administered by OTIF. It covers the classification, packaging, labelling, documentation, and load securing of dangerous goods, and applies to consignors, railway undertakings, and all other parties in the transport chain. Unlike ADR (road) or the IMDG Code (sea), RID is specifically tailored to the operational conditions and risk profile of rail. The regulations are updated on a regular cycle and transposed into EU law through corresponding directives.
