A Reefer Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) is a mandatory technical check of a refrigerated trailer carried out immediately before loading, covering the refrigeration unit, temperature controls, door seals, electrical supply, and defrost system. Its purpose is to confirm that the trailer can maintain specified cold-chain conditions from the moment goods are loaded – essential for perishables, pharmaceuticals, and biologics where temperature tolerances are tight. Results are recorded in a PTI report, which serves as evidence of cold-chain integrity for shippers, consignees, and insurers. Without proper documentation, damage claims can be difficult or impossible to enforce. Unlike continuous in-transit monitoring, the PTI is a one-time pre-departure status check.
