Diesel generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and shore power connections at terminals or on board vessels are the most common solutions. Perishable cargo such as fresh produce, fish, or pharmaceuticals is sensitive to even brief temperature excursions; a failure without backup can result in total cargo loss and significant liability claims. On long ocean voyages or during port delays, these redundancy systems are indispensable for both shipowners and shippers. Not to be confused with standard reefer plug connections, which are routine power supply, not emergency backup.
