Unlike fixed gantry cranes or rail-mounted systems, the reach stacker requires no permanent infrastructure and can move freely on rubber tyres between different storage and transfer zones within a terminal or inland depot. Its extendable telescopic boom with integrated spreader grips containers at the corner castings and typically achieves stacking heights of four to five units. The lateral reach of the boom allows the operator to access the second or even third container row without repositioning the machine. In smaller ports, rail terminals, and industrial sites where volumes do not justify full automation, the reach stacker is usually the most cost-effective handling solution.
