Its defining feature is lateral reach – the boom extends far enough to access containers in the second or third row of a block without relocating the outer stacks. A single operator controls the machine, provided the yard surface is hard-paved and load-bearing. Reach stackers regularly work alongside straddle carriers and container forklifts in port and inland depot operations. The key distinction from a counterbalance container handler is precisely that lateral reach: a standard counterbalance unit can only access the front row.
