Wagons arriving from different feeder services are regrouped by destination or train path, then dispatched as block or mixed trains. Large yards – such as those at Maschen in Germany or North Platte in the US – handle thousands of wagons per day and act as pivotal junctions in the freight network. Smaller facilities serve local or regional dispatch needs and provide space for loading, unloading, and light maintenance.
