A rail slot is the allocated time window that permits a specific train service to operate over a defined track section at a scheduled time. When a freight operator wants to run a train from Rotterdam to Milan, it must first secure a slot from the infrastructure manager, which fixes both the permitted route and the exact timeframe during which the train may occupy the tracks. Slots are awarded through the annual timetabling process or as ad-hoc paths outside the regular schedule. Because track capacity is finite and multiple operators compete for the same corridors, slot allocation is the primary mechanism infrastructure managers use to coordinate train movements and prevent conflicts. Not to be confused with the train path itself—the slot is the entitlement to use that path.
