In automated container terminals, the rail-mounted gantry crane (RMG) is the handling equipment of choice: travelling along embedded tracks through the container yard, it spans multiple rows simultaneously and stacks or retrieves boxes with high repetition accuracy. Rail guidance enables more precise positioning than rubber-tyred alternatives and is the foundation for full yard automation, including driverless interaction with automated guided vehicles. Compared to the RTG, the RMG achieves higher storage density and lower wear on the travelling mechanism, but its movement is confined to fixed rail corridors. RMG systems are found primarily at large, high-throughput seaports and intermodal inland terminals.
