When goods need to move over long distances, rail freight enters the picture as a cost-effective and low-emission alternative to trucking. Locomotives haul freight wagons or container flat cars across the rail network, consuming significantly less fuel and producing fewer CO₂ emissions per tonne-kilometre than road haulage. Freight forwarders typically embed rail in intermodal chains: a truck brings the container to a rail terminal, a train carries it to the destination terminal, and another truck handles last-mile delivery. This approach is well established on intra-European lanes and transcontinental corridors. Rail does require fixed departure times and terminal access — it cannot match the door-to-door flexibility of road transport.
