A rail buffer is a spring-loaded shock-absorption device mounted at both ends of European freight wagons to dampen impact forces during coupling and shunting, while maintaining a defined minimum clearance between vehicles. Together with the screw coupling, it forms the classic draw-and-buffer gear system standardised under UIC conventions for standard-gauge networks across Europe. Buffers protect cargo from jolts and reduce structural stress on wagon frames and bogies. They are distinct from the North American AAR coupler, which integrates both tensile and compressive forces into a single knuckle mechanism – in the European system, draw and buffer forces are handled by separate components.
