A hospital orders radiopharmaceuticals for cancer therapy; a laboratory ships samples for isotope analysis – both shipments fall under the most stringent hazardous goods regulations in international transport. Radioactive materials must be packed in approved containers suited to their activity level and hazard index (with absorbents and, where required, lead shielding), labeled with the internationally recognised trefoil symbol, and accompanied by complete transport documentation. Road transport is governed by ADR, sea freight by the IMDG Code, and air cargo by the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations – all three frameworks draw on IAEA safety standards. Carriers and forwarders need regulatory licences and must demonstrate that staff handling these goods are properly trained. Not to be confused with chemically toxic or corrosive substances, which fall under different hazard classes.
