Radio-frequency identification (RFID) enables the automatic, contactless capture of object data via electromagnetic signals – no line-of-sight to the reader required. A reader emits a signal that activates a transponder (tag) attached to the item; the tag responds by transmitting stored data such as item number, batch, or origin. In logistics, RFID is deployed at goods receipt and dispatch points, in inventory management, and in automated sorting systems – for instance, identifying pallets on conveyor lines or conducting real-time stock counts in high-bay warehouses. Compared with barcodes, RFID offers a clear operational advantage: multiple tags can be read simultaneously and each tag holds considerably more data. Passive tags require no battery and work at short range; active tags carry their own power source, extend read range significantly, and are well suited to long-haul shipment tracking.
