Unlike commercial invoices or packing lists, a proof of transport evidences that cargo has actually been handed over for carriage and is moving—or has moved—along the agreed route. The required document depends on the mode: road haulage uses the CMR consignment note, sea freight the bill of lading, air cargo the airway bill (AWB), and rail the CIM waybill. Each contains binding particulars of consignor, consignee, carrier, routing, weight and handover time. In customs proceedings—such as establishing export proof or substantiating VAT exemption on cross-border supplies—the proof of transport is a primary piece of evidence. It carries equal weight in cargo damage claims and contractual disputes between shipper and carrier.
