Proof of delivery (POD) is the document or electronic record confirming that a shipment has been handed over to the consignee. It typically captures the recipient's signature, date and time of handover, and a description of the goods covering quantity and condition. In day-to-day freight operations, POD is increasingly collected digitally: the consignee signs on a driver's tablet, or the driver photographs the receipt and uploads it instantly to the transport management system (TMS). The POD protects the carrier against unfounded claims of non-delivery or damage, and gives the shipper documented proof that contractual deadlines were met. Under the CMR convention, it serves as primary evidence in transport disputes.
