The production ramp-up describes the phase in which manufacturing is brought step by step from zero or from a reduced level to planned full utilisation. The term comes from ramp-up management and covers the period between the start or restart of production and stable series production at maximum capacity utilisation. In global supply chains the ramp-up is a critical planning factor: after factory holidays such as Chinese New Year, it often takes several weeks until suppliers deliver full volumes again – export volumes and booking levels fluctuate accordingly, while shipping lines may temporarily struggle with overcapacity. Freight forwarders and shippers cushion delayed ramp-ups with safety stock, orders brought forward and flexible transport options. Not to be confused with the start of production (SOP): the start is the moment, the ramp-up is the subsequent process up to full utilisation.
