Primary freight consolidation brings multiple small shipments from different shippers together into a single full load, significantly reducing the per-unit cost of transport. The process typically takes place at a consolidation warehouse or cross-dock facility at origin: individual consignments are sorted, labeled, and covered by a combined transport document before moving as a grouped shipment—LCL in a sea container, groupage by road, or co-loaded in an air freight ULD—to the destination region. It is the origin-side counterpart to deconsolidation, which breaks the combined load apart at destination. For small and mid-sized shippers, consolidation is usually far more cost-effective than booking an entire FCL or FTL.
