Prehaulage is the first leg of a transport chain, covering the movement of goods from the shipper's premises to a consolidation depot, container freight station (CFS), or port of loading before the main carriage begins. Freight forwarders arrange prehaulage to collect cargo from exporters and bring it to the point where it is stuffed into containers or unitized for the main haul. Together with main carriage and on-carriage, it forms the three standard segments of a multimodal transport chain. In ocean freight quotations, prehaulage is typically quoted as a separate line item and depends on distance, cargo volume, and local infrastructure.
