When a vessel berths, the freight forwarder typically has to submit the same arrival data multiple times—to customs, the port authority, health inspectors, and the terminal operator—through separate systems. The Port Single Window eliminates this duplication: one digital platform receives all mandatory filings and automatically routes the data to every relevant authority. Clearances run in parallel rather than in sequence, cutting vessel turnaround time and eliminating transcription errors. In the European Union, the Maritime Single Window has been mandatory for seaports since 2025. The concept is related to the national Single Window used in customs, but focuses specifically on the interfaces between the ship, the port, and public authorities.
