In container liner shipping, a port omission is the short-notice skipping of a single scheduled port call: the vessel continues its rotation but bypasses one specific port – for example because of port congestion, strikes, bad weather, or to recover accumulated delay. For freight forwarders and shippers this has two consequences: export cargo destined for the omitted port is not picked up and slips to later departures (rollover), while import cargo is discharged at an alternative port and must be forwarded by feeder vessel, rail or truck, causing extra costs and longer lead times. Terminal and customs processes at the alternative port should be clarified early, especially for time-critical or temperature-controlled cargo. Not to be confused with a blank sailing, in which an entire departure or rotation is cancelled.
