Getting a sea freight shipment off to a clean start depends on correctly identifying the port of loading: the harbour where cargo is taken on board and the bill of lading is issued. As a mandatory field in the B/L, it governs freight calculation, risk allocation under the agreed Incoterms, and the scope of marine insurance cover for the voyage. Together with the port of discharge, it defines both the insured route and the geographic validity of the transport document. In letter-of-credit transactions, any change to the port of loading without the issuing bank's explicit consent will typically render the presentation non-compliant. The port of loading should not be confused with the port of origin: in transshipment services, a feeder port may be the first point of departure before the cargo is transferred to the deep-sea vessel.
