Its structure consists of a reinforced floor frame with fixed end walls, but no sides or roof, allowing loading from above and from either side without restriction. Common cargo types include steel coils, industrial machinery, transformers, and prefabricated structural components. The lower tare weight compared to a closed unit can reduce freight costs, though proper lashing in accordance with CTU Code requirements is non-negotiable to prevent load shift during transit. Platform containers are distinct from flat racks, which have collapsible or absent end walls and are used for even more extreme over-dimensional cargo.
