> A piracy area is a geographically defined maritime zone where attacks on vessels by pirates or armed robbers occur regularly or are classified as an elevated risk.

A piracy area is a geographically defined maritime zone where attacks on vessels by pirates or armed robbers occur regularly or are classified as an elevated risk. The best-known piracy areas include the Gulf of Aden off the Somali coast, the Strait of Malacca, and the Gulf of Guinea off West Africa. For shipowners and cargo interests, the piracy area designation has direct operational consequences: war risk insurance becomes mandatory, war risk surcharges apply, and security protocols such as armed escorts or Best Management Practice measures must be followed. Key reporting bodies include the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre of the International Chamber of Commerce and the UKMTO in the Gulf of Aden. Not to be confused with a war risk area, which covers conflict zones beyond piracy.
