The term draws a clear distinction from bulk cargo such as grain, coal or ore, and from liquid bulk, both of which move unpackaged in mass containers. In freight forwarding, piece goods are routinely consolidated into less-than-truckload (LTL) or groupage services, where multiple shippers' consignments share a single vehicle or container, lowering individual freight costs. The trade-off is longer transit times, as cargo passes through sorting and transhipment hubs along the route. Full truckload (FTL) service offers greater speed for time-sensitive shipments at a correspondingly higher cost.
