A picking path optimization engine is an algorithm within a warehouse management system (WMS) that calculates the most efficient sequence of storage locations for each picker to visit. Instead of working through positions in simple location-number order, the engine resequences them based on travel criteria – common methods include sweep routing, cluster picking, and zone-based picking. It takes into account the actual floor layout, aisle widths, and in dynamic variants, current warehouse occupancy. In large distribution and fulfillment centers processing hundreds to thousands of order lines per shift, such engines deliver measurable reductions in cycle time and labor cost. Not to be confused with slotting algorithms, which determine where products are stored – the picking path engine optimizes the route to locations already defined.
