A driver arrives on time at the loading dock, the ramp is blocked, and warehouse staff have no idea a pick-up was scheduled—a textbook consequence of a missing or poorly communicated pick-up order. A pick-up order is the formal instruction from a shipper to a carrier or freight forwarder to collect goods at a defined location and time and introduce them into the transport chain. It records the collection address, time window, quantities, weight, packaging details, and any special requirements such as temperature control or dangerous goods classification. Once acknowledged by the carrier, it becomes the binding basis for route planning, freight invoicing, and liability. The pick-up order covers the collection phase only; onward carriage to the consignee is governed by separate transport documents such as a CMR consignment note, CIM waybill, or bill of lading.
