The Performance-related Heavy Vehicle Fee (LSVA, from the German Leistungsabhängige Schwerverkehrsabgabe) is a Swiss road charge levied on commercial vehicles and vehicle combinations with a permissible gross weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes. Unlike time-based vignette systems, the LSVA is calculated on kilometres actually driven on Swiss roads, multiplied by the permissible gross weight and an emissions-category rate. A mandatory on-board unit (OBU) records mileage automatically and transmits the data for billing. For international hauliers, the LSVA is a transparent but significant transit cost that is itemised separately in freight quotations. Exemptions apply only to narrowly defined vehicle types and operational categories.
