# Partial load in sea transport (LCL)

When a shipment is too small to justify a dedicated container, LCL comes into play. LCL – Less than Container Load – is the sea freight model in which cargo from multiple shippers is consolidated into a single shared container. Specialist consolidators group the individual consignments at origin; at destination, a Container Freight Station (CFS) deconsolidates the box and releases each shipment to its respective consignee. Compared with FCL (Full Container Load), LCL carries a higher cost per cubic metre or tonne due to the additional handling, sorting, and storage involved – but it requires no minimum volume. SME exporters, irregular importers, and shippers managing short-notice inventory replenishment are the most common users.
